The creation story

A human purpose.
An open creative process.

Sweetland was created and directed by Barry Smith, with substantial generative-AI involvement in writing development, illustrations and production.

My role as creator and author

I defined the purpose of Sweetland, its characters, its world and the meaning behind the story. I made the decisions about what belonged, what needed changing and what was ready to publish.

That process involved developing ideas, reviewing proposals, rejecting work that did not fit, revising the story and checking continuity across the words and pictures. Final creative and publication decisions remained with me.

Where AI contributed

I worked with ChatGPT and generative-AI tools throughout development. Their contribution went beyond spelling and grammar: it included brainstorming, generated prose proposals, rewriting, illustration generation, editing, continuity checks, accessibility descriptions and production support.

The published interior illustrations and cover artwork were generated using AI under my direction, review and approval. The manuscript developed through a mixture of human and AI drafting and revision; I do not claim that every final sentence can be separated into a human-only or AI-only origin.

This website also uses AI assistance in its writing and build, together with approved Sweetland artwork.

01 / Define

Purpose & world

Barry established the story’s direction, characters, themes and continuity rules.

02 / Develop

Draft & review

Human decisions and AI-generated proposals were brought together through repeated drafting, selection and correction.

03 / Approve

Check & publish

Approved text and artwork were checked, recorded and assembled into the final illustrated edition.

Keeping a record

A detailed publication provenance record was prepared for Book One. It documents the creative process, the role of AI, artwork approvals, editorial corrections and the final release files.

That record provides evidence of how the book was made. It is not, by itself, a legal determination of copyright or a guarantee that every publisher or distributor will accept the same production approach.

For publishing and professional readers: the current edition includes AI-generated artwork and mixed human/AI manuscript development. This is disclosed so you can assess the book against your organisation’s own requirements.

Based on the Book One AI / Human Provenance & Authorship Record, v1.1 Final, release locked on 6 September 2026. The confidential production archive is not published on this site.
